The Opportunity

Flock is looking to add an Android Video Engineer to our Device Video team. Our Device Video team is made up of driven engineers who are responsible for all of the Video code running on a variety of devices Flock deploys in the real world. They enable the whole experience by writing applications that reliably capture, process, and upload data for years at a time without needing human interaction to keep them running.

The Skillset

  • Strong Java, C/C++ skills.

  • Strong knowledge and experience with Embedded Video devices

  • Ability to pick up Kotlin

  • Be able to navigate the various layers of a video streaming stack: Transport protocols, container formats, cloud streaming concepts.

  • Have demonstrated expertise in a few areas of Embedded Video Streaming.

  • Be able to learn new areas of Embedded Video Streaming or learn these areas: GStreamer, RTSP, performance optimization, quality optimization, testing and validation.

  • Ability to read through a large existing codebase and adapt quickly.

  • Have worked custom Android devices or ability to.

  • Strong debugging skills and debugging on custom Android HW.

  • Architecture, design, documentation.

  • JIRA, Confluence, Jenkins, Gerrit, Git/GitHub.

90 Days at Flock

We are a results-oriented culture and believe job descriptions are a thing of the past. We prescribe to 90 day plans and believe that good days lead to good weeks, which lead to good months. This serves as a preview of the 90 day plan you will receive if you were to be hired as an Android Video Engineer at Flock Safety.

The First 30 Days

  • Learn as much as possible about Flock's devices, cloud systems, and customer requirements

  • Familiarize yourself with members of the Android Applications teams

  • Understand Flock’s product goals and system design

  • Get and set up the hard and soft tools to work with our devices

The First 60 Days

  • Continue to develop the reporting, graphing, and monitoring of metrics data from the Video Streaming stack

  • Familiarize yourself further with the full E2E architecture of Flocks video streaming solution

  • Investigate and architect device-local testing that can be run by engineers and product managers

90 Days & Beyond

  1. Extend use of developed tests and tooling to new Flock products

  2. Work with QA to understand key performance tests for Device Video in addition to overall Device Video testing strategy

  3. Realize usable and effective Device Video metrics and checkpoints to measure the success of deployments

The Interview Process

  1. Our First Chat: During this first conversation, you’ll meet with a recruiter to chat through your background, what you could bring to Flock, what you are looking for in your next role, and who we are.

  2. The Technical Assessment: You will meet with a potential future coworker to really dive into the role, the team, expectations, and what success means at Flock. You should expect the interview will cover the hard skills required to do the job, an architectural discussion, and an exploration of your past accomplishments and experiences. This is your chance to really nerd out with someone in your field.

  3. The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. You will meet with several teammates and cross-functional partners. Engineers should expect a technical assessment through coding interviews or architecture discussions. Your recruiter will provide more details to ensure you are fully prepared for your big day.

  4. The Executive Review: A chance to meet a leader within the Device Software team. They will be looking to get to know you better, understand your motivations, and understand your technical background. Be prepared to ask well-thought-out questions about the company, culture, and more.

💰Salary & Equity: In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary of $125,000-$170,000 as well as stock options.
