The Opportunity

Flock is looking to add an Android Framework Engineer to our Device OS Team. No UI components here! We run on headless custom Android devices. Our Engineering team is made up of driven people who are responsible for all of the code running on a variety of devices Flock deploys in the real world. They enable the whole experience by providing Android Application, Services, and Linux Kernel Drivers that reliably capture, process, and upload data for years at a time without needing human interaction to keep them running.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Take responsibility for a feature or module and deliver with high quality.

  • Write automatable code.

  • Document work, test cases, and interact with program, product, QA, and other engineers.

  • Estimate of work within reasonable accuracy and ability to communicate adjustments.

  • Assist in supporting issues reported in the field.

  • Additional responsibilities:

    • Be able to negotiate features and schedules

    • Identify and be a proponent of new features that will be beneficial to Flock.

    • Identify deficiencies in products, processes, and improve upon them.

    • Give tech talks.

The Skillset

We are looking for people who:

  • Have strong Kotlin/JAVA development experience such as but not limited to

    • Exposure to coroutines & OS threading concepts such as semaphores, synchronization, deadlocks

    • familiar with Android profiler & memory leaks/management, etc.

    • Unit testing using JUnit and mockk, using facades and dependency injection

  • Have exposure to or interest in AOSP development:

    • Including shell scripting experience & init.rc

    • Exposure to security and SE Policy

    • Possess strong debugging skills on custom Android HW.

    • Ability to trace app code through different layers of the stack

  • System app development, methodologies, design patterns, etc.

  • Have experience with architecture, design, and documentation.

  • Skilled in JIRA, Confluence, Jenkins, Gerrit, Git/GitHub.

Nice to Haves:

  • C/C++ skills and expertise with lower levels of the stack such as kernel, services, bootloaders etc.

  • Familiarity with tools like perfetto used for debugging and performance

  • Linux kernel driver development experience

  • Familiarity with Qualcomm based Android devices

  • Experience with custom Android HAL Libraries and interfaces

  • Experience with Qualcomm Camera Stack

  • Experience with Rust programming language

  • Have the ability to write automation shell scripts to improve self productivity and share such helper scripts with the team to boost overall productivity.

90 Days at Flock

The First 30 Days

  • Learn as much as possible about Flock's devices, cloud systems, and customer requirements

  • Familiarize yourself with members of the Engineering Team

  • Understand Flock device product goals and system design

The First 60 Days

  • Expand support for testing to additional Flock devices

  • Expand the use and accessibility to engineers

  • Contribute to system services development

90 Days & Beyond

  • Extend use of developed tests and tooling to new Flock products

  • Expand the use and adoption of test tooling beyond your immediate team into related teams and test automation

  • Use your knowledge of the system to start identifying gaps in the current test plans and expand the library of Flock specific test cases

The Interview Process

We want our interview process to be a true reflection of our culture: transparent and collaborative. Throughout the interview process, your recruiter will guide you through the next steps and ensure you feel prepared every step of the way.

  1. Our First Chat: During this first conversation, you’ll meet with a recruiter to chat through your background, what you could bring to Flock, what you are looking for in your next role, and who we are.

  2. The Hiring Manager Interview: You will meet with your potential future boss to really dive into the role, the team, expectations, and what success means at Flock. This is your chance to really nerd out with someone in your field.

  3. The Technical Assessment: Our technical assessments seek to test the hard skills required to do the job. Engineers may find themselves in coding interviews or architecture discussions, sales roles may present mock discovery calls, and leadership roles may craft 90 day plans. Your recruiter will inform you of which assessment you will be assigned and ensure you are fully prepared for your big day.

  4. The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. Depending on the team and role you are interviewing for, you may meet with several teammates as well as cross-functional partners.

💰Salary & Equity: In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary of $125,000-$170,000 as well as stock options
