The Opportunity

Flock is looking to add a Linux/Android Kernel Engineer to our Device OS/BSP Team. Our device team is made up of engineers who are responsible for all of the code running on a variety of devices Flock deploys in the real world. They enable the whole experience by creating firmware that reliably captures, processes, and uploads billions of images per day for years at a time without needing human interaction to keep them running.

The Skillset

We're looking for people who:

  • Have experience writing Linux Device Drivers for a modern Kernel version

  • Have experience bringing up Embedded Linux and/or Android devices

  • Have experience or formal knowledge of the Android HAL Layer

  • Are comfortable working in a fully Linux development environment including custom tooling, Docker containers, Git/Repo, etc. including modifying or creating build system tooling as needed

  • Experience using common hardware debug tools and practices

    • Oscilloscopes

    • Logic16/Pro (translate communication bus traffic)

    • Power Meters

    • Ability to read and interpret device/system schematics

Nice To Haves:

  • Development experience with Qualcomm chipsets running Android

  • Familiarity with or experience with Qualcomm Camera HAL and Kernel Drivers

  • Demonstrated understanding or experience with customizing “Qualcomm Proprietary” subsystems (BP)

  • Experience with battery-powered/power constrained devices

  • Experience developing or demonstrated knowledge of the following Linux Kernel subsystems:

    • V4L

    • Camera Sensors

    • Common Clock Framework

    • Static and Dynamic Power Management

    • Linux Device Tree topology and modification

  • Experience developing drivers for common peripheral bus technologies including SPI, I2C, UART

90 Days at Flock

This serves as a preview of the 90 day plan you will receive if you were to be hired as a Linux Kernel Engineer at Flock Safety.

The First 30 Days

  • Learn as much as possible about Flock's devices, cloud systems, and customer requirements

  • Familiarize yourself with members of the Engineering and Product Team

  • Understand Flock device product goals and system design

The First 60 Days

  • Perform Schematic reviews and component selection criteria for next rev HW

  • Participate in Kernel and Android code reviews

  • Participate in architecture plans for next OS releases and features

90 Days & Beyond

  • Design long term feature development goals and milestones

  • Participate in development planning and staging with Program Management

  • Implementation of new feature development for our devices

  • Work with QA Team to develop new test cases for features

The Interview Process

  1. Our First Chat: During this first conversation, you’ll meet with a recruiter to chat through your background, what you could bring to Flock, what you are looking for in your next role, and who we are.

  2. The Hiring Manager Interview: You will meet with your potential future boss to really dive into the role, the team, expectations, and what success means at Flock. This is your chance to really nerd out with someone in your field.

  3. The Technical Assessment: Our technical assessments seek to test the hard skills required to do the job. Engineers may find themselves in coding interviews or architecture discussions, sales roles may present mock discovery calls, and leadership roles may craft 90 day plans. Your recruiter will inform you of which assessment you will be assigned and ensure you are fully prepared for your big day.

  4. The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. Depending on the team and role you are interviewing for, you may meet with several teammates as well as cross-functional partners.

  5. The Executive Review: A chance to meet an executive and view Flock from a different lens. Be prepared to ask well-thought-out questions about the company, culture, and more.

💰Salary & Equity: In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary of $150,000-$190,000X as well as stock options
